Breakfast with Santa: VPRD event set for Saturday

From the Vinton Parks and Rec Dept. Our favorite jolly guy in the red suit will be joining us at our Breakfast with Santa event Saturday, December 9 at 9 AM. The cost per person is $5 if you register by this Thursday and the event will take place at the Vinton Skate & Activity Center. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, biscuits & gravy and your choice of beverage.

Author Boddicker to speak at Vinton library, Dec. 12

Author Major Boddicker will be speaking and visiting with friends and family at the Vinton Public Library on Tuesday, December 12th from 1 until 3. He is bringing some of his older books to sell and will be debuting his newest one. This will be an excellent chance to get the skinny from Major while munching on cookies. Everyone is welcome.

PEO Chapter MZ will meet Monday, December 11, at 1:30, at Windsor Manor with Brenda Hackbarth as hostess. Jackie Schoettmer will present the program.

Shellsburg Friends of Library Spaghetti Supper

The Shellsburg Friends of the Library are sponsoring an all you can eat Spaghetti Supper on Thursday, December 7th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This fund raising event will be held at the Shellsburg Legion Hall, 114 Main St. in Shellsburg. Spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, garlic bread and desserts will be served. Adults are $9, children ages 5 - 12 are $5.

Pancake breakfast set for Saturday at VSHS

The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA is continuing its support of local veterans, with a Dec. 2 pancake breakfast at the high school. Aided by the experienced pancake crew of the Vinton Kiwanis Club, the FFA members will be serving pancakes, sausage, milk and coffee. A free will donation will be accepted; proceeds will go toward the Benton County Veterans Assistance Program.

25th Annual Brandon Christmas celebration set for Dec. 1-2

The 25th annual Brandon Christmas celebration will take place Dec. 1-2, in several locations throughout the down. Exciting final minutes at VGH Tree Walk silent auction

The Virginia Gay Hospital Tree Walk fund-raiser was a success again this year, as hundreds of people bid on more than 50 trees, wreaths and other items for the auction that ended Tuesday. A few of the trees were so popular that bidders arrived just before five to make sure they had the chance to submit a final bid.

Friends of the Shelter participate in Cookie Walk & Howliday Bazaar

Vinton's Friends of the Shelter are offering another way that you can support them, while getting ready for the holidays. There will be a Cookie Walk and Howliday Bazaar on Saturday, December 9 from 11-2:00 p.m. at the Kirkwood Linn County Regional Center located at1770 Boyson Road, Hiawatha (we are at a new location this year). Stop in for your holiday baked goods! Delicious sweet treats will be for sale, as well as gifts for animals and the people who love them.

'Be the Change' fitness group donates to VGH, plans Sunday flash mob

The "Be the Change" fitness group met on Tuesday, to present a check to the Virginia Gay Hospital Gifts of Hope fund, and to practice for Sunday's flash mob dance performance at 1 p.m. Sunday, during the annual Holiday Open House. The members do not pay a fee to join Teresa Erger's fitness and dance class, but do make donations, which are passed on to local causes each month.

Celebrate Brandy Shirk's birthday by raising money for Honor Flight, Saturday in LPC

For most of the past several years, Brandy Shirk has turned her birthday celebration into a community event that helps raise funds for an important organization. This year, the trend continues on Saturday evening, Nov. 11, when Brandy and her friends and family will celebrate her birthday at the La Porte City Golf Course, from 5 to 11 p.m. All proceeds this year will go toward the Cedar Valley Honor Flight organization based in Waterloo, which provides free trips to Washington, D.
